Pressemelding fra LEN 30. juni:
36th European Junior Diving Championships in Budapest
Nine Champions from last year will try to retain their titles
Budapest (pps) Russia and Ukraine, the most successful nations at the 35th European Junior Diving Championships in Minsk, will defend their titles at this years event in Budapest from July 1st to 5th. The two countries won 24 of the overall 42 medals in the capital of Belarus in 2008. Russia achieved six gold, seven silver and two bronze medals in 14 events. Ukraine won five titles plus two silver and two bronze medals. Great Britain, France and hosts Belarus all secured one title each. Germany, Greece and Poland also won medals.
Russia and Ukraine in particular have entered several of last years medal winners in Budapest. Russian Ilya Zakharov wants to retain his 1m springboard and platform titles and will also compete in the 3m event. One of his strongest rivals will be Belarus Andrei Pavluk. Ukraines Oleksandr Bondar and Oleksandr Gorshkovozov, who won bronze in the 3m synchro event at the 2009 European Diving Championships in Turin three months ago, have entered the 3m individual as well as the synchro competitions. They are the hot favourites in the synchro event in Budapest as well, particularly as Gorshkovozov won the title last year then partnering with Dmitro Meshenkij. Great Britains James Milton is another title holder who will try to retain his title in platform diving.
Russian Natalia Zamyatina wishes to successfully defend her title in the 1m springboard event. One of her main contenders is team-mate Maria Smirnova who finished runner-up last year. Title holder Olga Vitnonyak (Russia), silver medallist Aliaksandra Yasihkevich (Belarus), plus Alina Chaplenko and bronze medallist Viktoria Petekhina (both Ukraine) will be strong contenders in platform diving.
In 3m synchro Anna Pysmenskaya of Ukraine together with her new partner Viktoria Kesar have high chances to top the podium. Last year in Minsk Pysmenskaya won the event with Evgenia Ponomarenko.
A total of nine title holders will compete again, though some are now in the older category, plus seven other 2008 medal winners. Eligible for the 36th European Junior Diving Championships in Budapest are the age-groups 1994-95 (B category) and 1991-1993 (A category). Divers from 19 nations have entered the Championships. The Alfred Hajos Swimming Complex on Margaret Island in Budapest will host the European Junior Diving Championships for the very first time.
Some of the competitors will not only compete at the upcoming FINA World Swimming Championships in Rome (July 17th – August 2nd) but will most certainly return to Budapest for the European Swimming Championships to be held at the same venue from August 4th to 15th of 2010.
